It is important to be able to know what Db2 is doing, how it is doing it, and how well it is doing it. The data in SMF records can give us those answers, and most of the time we have monitoring software that can do that for us without our having to understand how it all works. But having some detailed knowledge can be helpful in some situations, and for those of us who just like to know how everything works, it can be fascinating.

We will discuss what Db2 SMF records are, how IFCIDs fit into them, and how traces can control them. We will learn how to find out the meaning of the field names, and an easy way to look them up. I hope to demystify these concepts so that everyone can gain a little more clarity about them. Knowledge is power!
